Empresa informática estadounidense, líder en el desarrollo de sistemas y aplicaciones de sofware para computadoras personales.

Microsoft, con oficinas centrales en Redmond, Wash., también fabrica hardware y publica libros y títulos multimedia. Fue fundada en 1975 por Bill Gates y Paul G. Allen (n. 1954), quienes adaptaron el lenguaje BASIC para usarlo en computadoras personales (PC). Entregaron bajo licencia varias versiones de este lenguaje a diversas empresas, desarrollaron otros lenguajes de programación, y en 1981 lanzaron el sistema operativo MS-DOS para las computadoras personales IBM. La posterior adopción de MS-DOS por la mayoría de los demás fabricantes de computadoras personales generó enormes ganancias a Microsoft, la que se transformó en sociedad anónima abierta en 1986. En 1983, la empresa creó la primera versión de Microsoft Word, su popular programa de procesamiento de textos, y en 1985 desarrolló Microsoft Windows, una interfaz gráfica de usuario (GUI) para computadoras con MS-DOS. En 2001, Microsoft lanzó Xbox, una consola de videojuegos que rápidamente logró el segundo lugar en el mercado de este rubro, donde se realizan operaciones por US$10 mil millones. En 2002, Microsoft lanzó Xbox Live, una red de juegos en banda ancha para sus consolas.
